An International Discussion on the Issues of Molecular Medicine

An International Discussion on the Issues of Molecular Medicine      An open workshop on molecular medicine took place at the Institute for Molecular Medicine of the Sechenov University on 21 November, 2016 , as a part of the international conference “Toolkits for DNA vaccine design, an update”.
The workshop was focused on the design of DNA vaccines which would be effective against cancers & infectious diseases.
Dr. Andrey Zamyatnin, the leader of the strategic academic unit “A multidisciplinary hub for clinical and life studies” moderated the discussion.

The presentations covered molecular medicine, biotechnology, mechanisms of autoimmune disease responses, particularly:
1)    Molecular-targeted therapy
-Prof. Joon Haeng Rhee (Chonnam National University Medical School, Korea)  “Flagellin as a versatile adjuvant for vaccines against intractable diseases”
2)    Parasitic Infections
-Prof. Östlund Farrants, A.K. (Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Gren Institute, Stockholm University, Sweden)
“Differential response to malaria in two ethnic groups in Sub-Saharan Africa”
-Sergey Belikov (Stockholm University) “Quantification of transcription factor – DNA binding affinity in a living cell”
3) Hereditary diseases (Primary Immunodeficiencies)
-Lisa Westerberg, Department of Microbiology, Tumor & Cell Biology, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden) “Understanding how Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASp) stings in immune cells”
4)  Cancer & Gene Therapy Techniques
-Alex Shneider (CureLab Oncology, Inc., Boston, USA; University of
Ariel, Ariel, Israel; OOO CL Oncology, Moscow, Russia) “Anti-inflammatory gene therapy”
-Dmitry Mikhaylenko (Institute of Molecular Medicine, I.M.Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Moscow, Russia)
“Mutation and gene expression analysis of urine sediments in non-invasive molecular genetic diagnostics of the common cancer types”
In his closing remarks Dr.Zamyatnin introduced a cross-disciplinary platform for improving the quality of life for patients with the socially significant diseases, which was established at the Sechenov University under the academic excellence project “5-100”.
Posters on Structural pathology of chromosome region 10q23.3-26.3 ingilloblastoma, Methylation matrix and transmembrane proteins encoding genes in breast cancer, Identification of aberrant DNA methylation in paediatric active myeloid leukaemia by myltiplelex methylation sensitive PCR were the most popular presentations during the poster session.
